Tucked into Norfolk Island’s north coast, Cockpit Waterfall is a place of shifting moods and wonder. After heavy downpours, water plunges dramatically into Cascade Bay below, but even in drier months, the lookout offers sweeping views over rust-red cliffs and open sea.
Getting there is simple, but the setting feels worlds away. Just a short drive from Burnt Pine, a peaceful boardwalk leads from the car park to a lookout perched high above the coastline. Below, Cascade Creek winds toward the sea, flanked by grazing cattle and Norfolk pines. This is one of the island’s quietest corners, ideal for birdwatching, enjoying nature, and taking photos of the view.
Even when the waterfall is still, the land is full of movement with seabirds circling the cliffs, grass shifting in the wind, and clouds rolling over the horizon. If you’re lucky enough to visit after rain, the waterfall puts on a show worth stopping for.
