Norfolk Island’s coastline is a tapestry of contrasts – from golden sands nestled between rugged cliffs, to tranquil lagoons beside dynamic surf, and bays where history and nature converge. Whether you’re searching for the perfect swimming spot, a snorkeling adventure, a scenic hike, or a quiet spot to reflect, each beach and bay offers its own distinct experience.

While our beaches and bays appear calm, there may be strong undercurrents beneath the surface. We always recommend checking conditions with a friendly local and following signage.

Emily Bay Lagoon

Emily Bay Lagoon is famous for its clear, calm waters and golden curve of sand. Great for families, snorkellers of all levels, or a relaxed swim, with reef fish gathering just metres from shore and the historic Salt House ruins a short stroll away.

Anson Bay

A secluded beach is framed by cliffs and only reached via a winding walking track, Anson Bay is a picture-perfect location for picnics, photography, and watching the swell roll in. Swimming isn’t recommended, but the views are unforgettable.

Bumboras

Locals call it Bumby, and it’s where they go to surf reef breaks, forage periwinkles (hihi), or just float in the rockpools. A rocky, reef-lined bay that’s great for snorkelling at high tide, rockpooling at low, or a peaceful beach picnic at sunset.

Cemetery Bay

Tucked just behind historic headstones, this quiet stretch of sand feels reflective and serene. It’s also a favourite with dog lovers—Norfolk’s most popular off-leash beach, where locals and their four-legged companions enjoy a stroll or splash.

Slaughter Bay

Set within the Kingston UNESCO World Heritage Site, Slaughter Bay offers some of the island’s best low-tide snorkelling and reef exploration, thanks to its calm, shallow waters.

Cascade Bay

Rugged and cinematic, Cascade isn’t for swimmers – but it’s a window into island life. Watch boats unload the day’s catch at the pier, or take in the wild beauty from the clifftop. Nearby walking trails offer coastal views and a breath of sea air you’ll want to bottle.

No Two Tides the Same

Norfolk’s coastline doesn’t stay still. A calm bay in the morning might be rolling with reef breaks by afternoon. Light shifts, tides rise and fall, and even familiar beaches reveal something new each time. No beach is ever quite the same, so make time to dig your toes into the sand, return, and let the ocean surprise you.
