Tucked into the southern coastline just west of Kingston, Bumboras (or ‘Bumby’ to locals) is a hidden beach with wild beauty and crystal clear water. Small and rocky, it’s a local favourite for quiet beach days, reef exploring and laid-back surf sessions when the conditions are right.
Swimming here isn’t ideal due to reef, swell and changing conditions, but at low tide the shallow rock pools are perfect for a cooling dip and a bit of exploring. Just keep an eye on the ocean, ask a local if you aren’t sure, read any signage, and enjoy Bumby for what it does best – a rugged, beautiful place to relax by the sea.
Anson Bay is one of Norfolk’s prime surf spots, with a consistent break close to shore. But unlike busier beaches elsewhere, there’s no crowd here – just you, the surf, and the sea. While it’s not ideal for swimming due to strong currents and surf conditions, it remains a favourite for its raw beauty and connection to nature.
Getting there is part of the experience. A steep, unsealed road leads to a creek-side car park and a boardwalk that guides you to the beach. Once you arrive, you’ll find tide pools alive with marine life, waves breaking on the reef, and often not another soul in sight.
Whether you’re watching birds in the surrounding reserve or fossicking in the rocks, Bumboras rewards those who linger. Depending on the tide, some pools are deep enough for a dip, and the nearby barbecue spot makes it easy to settle in for the afternoon.
