Sheltered by reef and ringed by pines, Emily Bay Lagoon is Norfolk Island’s most iconic swimming beach. With calm, crystal-clear waters and a setting steeped in history, it’s no wonder it was named one of Australia’s Best Beaches in 2025.
While the lagoon is often beautifully calm, ocean conditions can change. If you’re unsure where it’s safe to swim, take a moment to read the signage and check the conditions – the Visitor Information Centre or a friendly local will happily point you in the right direction.
Anson Bay is one of Norfolk’s prime surf spots, with a consistent break close to shore. But unlike busier beaches elsewhere, there’s no crowd here – just you, the surf, and the sea. While it’s not ideal for swimming due to strong currents and surf conditions, it remains a favourite for its raw beauty and connection to nature.
Part of the Kingston UNESCO World Heritage Site, Emily Bay offers safe swimming, easy snorkelling and a peaceful lagoon vibe that’s hard to beat. Families love the gentle shallows, while snorkellers can spot reef fish and coral just metres from shore. The floating pontoon adds extra fun for swimmers of all ages.
Beyond the water, the beach is fully equipped for a day out, with barbecues, picnic tables and shaded areas just steps from the sand. And for those who prefer to stay dry, the glass-bottom boat tour offer a stunning look at the reef below – home to over 60 species of marine life.
