Captain Cook Monument & Lookout

Windswept Views and a World-Famous Landing

Follow in the footsteps of Captain James Cook at this breathtaking northern clifftop, where history and natural beauty come together. It was here, in 1774, that Cook first landed and famously described Norfolk Island as ‘paradise’. With its soaring pines, craggy headlands, and views that stretch far into the South Pacific, it’s easy to understand why it captured his heart.

Sweeping Vistas and a Sense of Discovery

A stone obelisk marks the place of Cook’s landing, but the real spectacle begins at the lookout where you can gaze across sheer cliffs fringed with Norfolk pines, and out to sea where dramatic rock formations such as Bird Rock, Elephant Rock, and Green Pool Stone, rise from the ocean. Keep your eyes peeled for seabirds riding the coastal thermals, and whales breaching in season.

From here, you can also explore the surrounding Norfolk National Park on foot. The Bridle Track descends from the monument and links up with a network of walking trails, making it a perfect starting point for a morning hike or picnic with a view.
