What is Bounty Day?

Bounty Day celebrates a defining moment in Norfolk Island’s history – when the mutineers of the HMS Bounty sought refuge on the island after their famous mutiny against Captain Bligh. Arriving in 1790, the mutineers and their Tahitian companions began a new chapter on Norfolk Island, and their descendants, the Pitcairn Islanders, continue to shape the island’s culture today. This day is a tribute to their resilience and the unique blending of cultures that defines Norfolk Island.

What Happens on Bounty Day

Bounty Day celebrations begin in the morning with a re-enactment of the landing at Kingston Pier, where descendants of the Bounty mutineers, dressed in period costumes, recreate the dramatic arrival of their ancestors. The celebrations continue with a procession through Kingston, culminating in a wreath-laying ceremony at the Cenotaph, where hymns are sung and respects are paid. In the afternoon, the families gather to share food, music, and enjoy festive celebrations together. Visitors can only attend if invited by a local family or if they pre-book  a lunch with a tour company.
