Captain James Cook was the first known European to discover Norfolk Island. He discovered this uninhabited paradise in 1774 during his second voyage around the world aboard HMS Resolution.
He named the Island Norfolk after the Duchess of Norfolk, wife of Edward Howard, 9th Duke of Norfolk.

Captain Cook monument is part of the National Parks on the northern side of the island.

Although a significant day in the islands history, there are no planned events for this day.
