Tourism Booming on Norfolk Island Norfolk Island has recorded a 22 per cent rise in visitation in the 2006/07 financial year, with more than 34,300 travellers flying to the island over the past 12 months.
The bumper figure is the highest in three years and follows the debut of more international flights to the island by Qantas code-share partner and island-run airline, Norfolk Air.
Around 75 per cent of visitors to Norfolk in 2006-07 were from Australia and 24 per cent from New Zealand. Norfolk Island Tourism General Manager Steve McInnes said the big increase in tourist numbers followed an increase in flights to the island, stronger relationships with travel industry partners and more focus on the group and events market. Mr McInness said other factors behind the climb in numbers included an increase in marketing activity, the sale of new affordable packages and the debut of new attractions and tours on the island including soft adventure experiences such as kayaking and mountain biking. "Norfolk Air now flies from Australia to Norfolk Island eight times a week including flights from Sydney, Brisbane and now Newcastle so this solid service has definitely helped to attract more visitors," he said. "We've made it easier and more affordable than ever for people to discover Norfolk's unique magic and our visitors are clearly enjoying the experience with an average of 30 per cent visitors returning for a repeat visit."
Located 1600km north-east of Sydney and an external territory of Australia, Norfolk is home to the descendants of the Bounty mutineers and boasts its own language, a colourful convict history, dramatic coastal scenery, pristine beaches, coral lagoons, 35 great restaurants and cafes, one of the world's most scenic golf courses and exciting adventure activities such as kayaking, mountain biking and scuba diving.
