Extra Norfolk Air Flight for Surging Xmas Demand

Norfolk Air and Qantas have announced an additional flight to Norfolk Island to meet strong demand for travel to the Island over Christmas-New Year.

The flight will depart Brisbane on Friday December 22, supplementing existing Saturday, Sunday, and Wednesday direct 737 services from Brisbane and Sydney.

Norfolk Island Tourism General Manager Steve McInnes said group and holiday bookings to the island had surged since the new Qantas-ticketed, Ozjet-chartered 737 service began midway through the year.

"Visitor numbers are up 28 per cent from July to October, showing that we have bucked downward trends evident elsewhere around the South Pacific and Australia," he said.

"Norfolk Island is ideal for couples and families seeking an away-from-it-all holiday with great food, intriguing tours, very competitive shopping and plenty of sporting and soft adventure activities.

"We're also a great place for small meetings and incentive groups, and we continue to drop keenly-priced fares and packages into the market to keep us competitive with popular domestic destinations."

Mr McInnes said he was expecting recent high demand to continue over the Christmas period as more and more people discovered the improved air services, wide ranging accommodation options and summers that were much milder than the island's more tropical Pacific Island neighbours.

Mr McInnes said the Norfolk Air service was now island-based, with its own cabin crew and a new website - www.norfolkair.com - that enabled travellers to plan their holidays on the island.

"Additional flights are being planned from Brisbane and Sydney to cope with the extra demand, and travel agents should check for available seats with their preferred wholesalers because not all seat availability will show on their CRS systems."
